GM Super Cruise FAQs: Explore Hands-Free Driving for Your GMC Vehicles

GMC vehicles have plenty to offer, from impressive performance and towing capabilities to adventure-ready accessories. Whether you're looking for a luxury SUV or high-performance pickup truck, a GMC vehicle means getting a powerful engine and plenty of technology and safety features.

The GM Super Cruise technology is one such feature. Super Cruise is GMC's hands-free driver assistance technology, designed to increase driving confidence on non-divided highways in the U.S. and Canada. General Motors was the first company to offer this feature in selected vehicles. Buyers need to sign up for a GMC Connected Services plan to access Super Cruise capabilities.

GM Super Cruise FAQs: Get to Know this Feature

What is GM Super Cruise?

Super Cruise technology enables easy, convenient hands-free driving on compatible roads. This advanced technology is now available on more GMC vehicles than ever before.

Super Cruise: How does it work?

Super Cruise technology works with your vehicle's Adaptive Cruise Control. While engaged, it controls acceleration and braking at a driver-selected following gap. As part of the vehicle's OnStar Connected Services, Super Cruise uses real-time LiDAR map data, cameras, GPS, and sensors to detect curves - making long drives and commutes more enjoyable. It is always wise to refer to the owner's manual about your vehicle's Super Cruise capabilities.

Is it hands-free?

Definitely. Super Cruise was the world's first truly hands-free driving system. On compatible roads, even without hands on the wheel or feet on the brakes, the driving system continues to operate.

How do I activate Super Cruise in my GMC vehicle?

When you're driving on a Super Cruise-compatible road, you can turn on Adaptive Cruise Control and set your desired speed. Look for the steering wheel symbol in the driver information center. It appears when Super Cruise is available. Activate Super Cruise by pushing the button on your steering wheel. As soon as Super Cruise is engaged, the light bar at the top of the steering wheel turns green.

Does Super Cruise work on any road?

There are more than 400,000 miles of Super Cruise-compatible roads in the United States and Canada, and efforts are ongoing to expand the network. However, not all roads are compatible with Super Cruise. Currently, Super Cruise covers most divided highways with clearly marked lanes. Two major interstate highways (460 and 221) and Route 122 in the Bedford, VA, area are Super Cruise-enabled.

Is it safe to use Super Cruise if I'm not paying attention?

The driver attention system in Super Cruise detects a driver's gaze and head position, alerting the driver to pay close attention to the road when necessary. When the driver needs to take control, the Driver Attention System alerts them through visual, haptic, and audio signals. When the driver fails to respond to several alerts, the vehicle comes to a safe, controlled stop, hazard lights are turned on, and OnStar is contacted for assistance.

Is it free?

Each Super Cruise-equipped vehicle is provided with three years of data connectivity. After the vehicle's trial period ends, you'll need to purchase a Super Cruise plan to continue using the technology.

How to Use Super Cruise in a Responsible Way

Your complete attention is still necessary while using Super Cruise technology. Thus, you need to keep your eyes on the road and avoid getting distracted. There are also some instances when you need to take control of your steering wheel, such as the following:

  • When there are construction zones or objects on the road Super Cruise does not steer to avoid them
  • When making a turn, merging into traffic, stopping at a crossing or traffic light, and exiting the highway
  • When approaching an intersection

Some cities and provinces also do not allow hands-free driving. In such cases, you may still use Super Cruise but need to hold the steering wheel lightly. But it's still better to be aware of the rules in your area regarding hands-free driving.
